AI to Oversee River Traffic in St. Petersburg

Computer vision will automatically detect and prevent navigation violations, making waterways safer for residents and tourists alike.

AI Monitors the Waterways

Artificial intelligence is coming to St. Petersburg’s rivers. The city is launching an AI-based monitoring system to oversee river traffic — one of the major outcomes of the 2025 navigation season. The initiative aims to reduce the number of accidents on the city’s waterways by improving compliance and safety.

Special cameras will be installed on the Karpovka, Krestovka, and Malaya Nevka rivers, as well as on the Palace and Exchange bridges. Using computer vision, the system will automatically detect violations of navigation rules, such as entering restricted zones or operating without proper documentation. The project responds to growing safety concerns: during the last navigation season, 16 incidents were recorded, mostly due to non-compliance with maritime regulations.

Digital Transformation of River Transport

“Looking back, we can confidently say that the 2025 navigation season went smoothly,” said Dmitry Vanchkov, Deputy Chairman of the St. Petersburg Transport Committee. “We not only maintained key performance indicators but also laid the foundation for the further development of water transport as an environmentally friendly, convenient, and safe mode of urban transit.”

St. Petersburg continues to modernize its river transport infrastructure. In 2025, passenger traffic remained steady at 5.2 million people, while the city’s fleet expanded with new electric and hybrid vessels. The introduction of AI-based monitoring marks the next step in building a smart, sustainable, and secure urban transport system.
