Digital Lesnoy Kontrol Platform Helps Protect Forests in Russia
Russian regions are rolling out homegrown digital tools to safeguard forest resources.

Several digital forest-monitoring projects were launched across Russia in 2025. Experts say electronic systems are making the management of green resources more accurate, transparent, and efficient. The federal digital platform Lesnoy Kontrol (Forest Control) brings together data on everything happening within the forest fund – the condition of plots, logging activity, and reforestation and conservation programs.
A Homegrown Zeleny Gorod
In Perm Krai, for example, authorities operate their own Zeleny Gorod (Green City) portal. It aggregates information on parks, public gardens, nature reserves, and even individual trees, according to Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
The Perm City Forestry has also developed its own web platform. The system helps forest rangers quickly determine their location in the forest and identify illegal logging or land seizures.
Forestry specialists are increasingly using artificial intelligence. AI speeds up calculations of average forest inventory indicators for specific forest blocks, determines how many seedlings are needed to restore a given area, and analyzes wildfire incidents.
