Forensic units within Russia’s Interior Ministry are increasingly using artificial intelligence technologies in criminal investigations.

“AI-based solutions are already being actively deployed. They allow us to process large volumes of information and improve the efficiency of checks across forensic databases, including the central fingerprint registry,” said Lieutenant General of Police Vadim Kazmin, head of the Interior Ministry’s Forensic Center.

According to Kazmin, algorithms are now used to handle large datasets and verify information against forensic records. AI analyzes entries in the central fingerprint database and helps accelerate the search for matches.

3D Models and Digital Twins

Interior Ministry units are also receiving high-precision analytical instruments manufactured in Russia. The new equipment complements traditional forensic methods and expands laboratory capabilities.

“Using advanced additive technologies, 3D printers, and laser scanners, we can create accurate replicas of evidence with full dimensional characteristics. Computer modeling allows us to generate digital twins and test various forensic methods and approaches,” Kazmin said.

Digital models enable experts to test hypotheses without risking damage to physical evidence.

The ministry is also considering expanding the use of unmanned systems. Drones and robotic platforms make it possible to conduct inspections in hard-to-reach or hazardous areas, including sites of industrial accidents.

Remote inspection technologies can document scenes in adverse weather conditions, saving time and protecting personnel. Taken together, artificial intelligence, 3D modeling, and unmanned platforms are reshaping the digital landscape of forensic science. Still, officials stress that the final decision always rests with a trained human expert.
