Derbent to Bring Its Ancient City to Life With VR
The Naryn-Kala fortress is preparing to launch a VR tour that will take visitors through a 16th–17th-century underground reservoir and into the city's early medieval past.
Visitors wearing VR headsets will be able to walk the streets of ancient Derbent, explore an Eastern bazaar and a historic mosque, and end the experience with a view of the city from a hot-air balloon basket, the Derbent Museum-Reserve press office told Mirmol. The technology will recreate the city's buildings and inhabitants as they appeared during the eras of the Sasanian Empire and the Arab Caliphate.
The VR experience is being developed at the new Museum of Archaeology, which opened at the fortress in 2025 and houses more than 500 artifacts dating from the Early Bronze Age through the 13th and 14th centuries.
An exact launch date for the VR tours has not yet been set.
