Dagestan Launches Bot to Preserve Native Languages
A digital service has been launched in the republic to help residents learn and preserve the languages of the peoples of Dagestan.
Before starting the lessons, users take a short five-question test that shows how well they already know the selected language. They can proceed if they answer at least three questions correctly.
Users who pass the test gain access to translation exercises. Texts must be translated from Russian into one of six languages, including Avar, Dargwa, Kumyk, Lezgian, Lak and Tabasaran. Materials for these exercises are provided by Yandex.
Some translations are also provided with audio, although the bot administrator enables this feature selectively rather than for all users.
The service was developed by the republic's Ministry of Digital Development, Information and Press. The completed translations are expected to be added to the Translator service in the future.
