Russia Introduces Universal QR Code for All Types of Payments

A new nationwide QR system streamlines purchases by merging various payment options, including the upcoming digital ruble, into a single user interface.

Russia has launched a universal QR code system that integrates multiple payment methods into a single platform. Users can now pay for purchases via the Fast Payment System (FPS), banking services, installment services, and eventually the digital ruble, according to RIA Novosti.

The new QR code is already available across all banks and retail outlets that support the FPS. Merchants participating in the platform can display the code on POS terminals, self-service kiosks, or printed placards. Consumers simply scan the code using a smartphone camera or a mobile payment app and are then directed to a payment selection screen.

The Bank of Russia has proposed that all banks be required to support the new QR technology by September 1, 2026. The exact timeline for merchant adoption will be set by the Bank’s Board of Directors.

Integration into the platform is free of charge for banks, which significantly lowers the barrier to nationwide rollout.
