Russian Scientists Develop AI-Powered Robotic Colonoscope

A new endoscopic device designed in Russia aims to increase the accuracy of colorectal cancer screening using real-time AI analysis and panoramic imaging.

Researchers at Sechenov University are developing an advanced robotic colonoscope that incorporates artificial intelligence to improve the detection of polyps and reduce the chances of missing critical signs of colorectal cancer. According to TASS, the first prototype is expected to debut in 2027.

The device features five integrated cameras providing a 340-degree field of view—almost double that of conventional colonoscopes—effectively eliminating blind spots where tumors could go unnoticed.

AI processes the video feed in real time, alerting physicians to areas of interest and automatically stitching together the camera outputs into a single panoramic image to streamline diagnostics.

Colorectal cancer remains one of the most common and deadly cancers, making early detection essential for successful treatment. Traditional colonoscopy can sometimes miss polyps, but this new technology is designed to minimize that risk and boost diagnostic reliability.

Initial prototypes are expected between 2026 and 2027. The project is a showcase of Russia’s ambitions in high-tech medicine and its pursuit of innovation-driven healthcare solutions.
