Russian Airport Turns to AI to Locate Lost Luggage

Vnukovo International Airport is testing an AI-powered baggage identification system that automates the search process and replaces foreign technologies.

At Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow, artificial intelligence is being deployed to help travelers recover lost luggage faster and more efficiently. The airport’s press service announced the trial of a new domestically developed system designed to automate how baggage incidents are processed.

Previously, staff had to manually enter information about missing luggage into the tracking database. Now, travelers can simply place a suitcase into a special AI-equipped scanning station. The system analyzes the bag’s parameters—including size, shape, color, tags, and visible damage—and automatically creates a case in “BAGS Search,” Russia’s new baggage-tracking platform.

Developed by the software company Aviacode, the BAGS Search Station was created as a replacement for imported systems and is part of a wider national effort to modernize airport operations.

Another Step Toward Digital Modernization

Vnukovo officials describe the pilot as a key milestone in digital infrastructure upgrades and the broader adoption of smart technologies across the airport.

The innovation follows the recent launch of an online baggage claim service for domestic passengers, allowing travelers to file reports electronically and receive automatic updates via email. Users can also track their baggage status in real time through the airport’s website—marking another move toward seamless, tech-driven air travel in Russia.
