Russia Unveils New AI-Driven Nuclear Tech for the Energy of the Future

At the Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant, Russian scientists showcased new digital tools—from AI systems to “digital twins”—aimed at making nuclear energy smarter, safer, and more efficient.

Russia is pushing its nuclear industry deeper into the digital age. At the first International Scientific and Technical Conference “Modern Approaches and Innovations in Nuclear Energy,” held at the Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant, experts presented next-generation technologies designed to enhance the safety and performance of nuclear power systems. The event brought together about 130 engineers, scientists, and students, highlighting how artificial intelligence and predictive analytics could transform how nuclear stations are operated.

According to Rosenergoatom, the state operator of Russia’s civilian nuclear plants, key innovations include AI-based control systems, virtual reality training environments, and predictive maintenance tools. The centerpiece of the presentation was the use of digital twins—virtual models of actual reactor units that allow engineers to simulate any operational scenario and fine-tune plant efficiency without taking physical risks.

The Cradle of Water-Water Reactor Technology

Vladimir Povarov, director of the Novovoronezh plant, emphasized the site’s historic importance in the development of nuclear energy.

“This place is the cradle of water-water reactor technology, the source of more than sixty years of experience, unique scientific ideas, and technical solutions,” Povarov said. “For young researchers and students, such a conference is a great opportunity to make themselves known, build connections, and develop their ideas.”

Alongside the main sessions, a youth forum gathered around 300 students, who explored the key skills required to work in the modern nuclear industry.

The Novovoronezh conference underscored Russia’s ambition to cement its status as a global leader in safe, digitally enhanced nuclear power—a sector the country increasingly sees as central to its technological and energy future.
