Russian Researchers Unveil AI System to Combat Land Desertification

The new "Verda" technology uses artificial intelligence to predict soil degradation risks and help bring damaged land back into agricultural production.

"Russian researchers have developed an AI-powered system called "Verda," designed to restore land affected by desertification and stop further degradation".

The project was announced by Sberbank representatives on the Russian TV channel “Rossiya 24.”

According to Sberbank’s press office, the technology assists in building predictive models that can detect threats to soil health early and guide timely action to neutralize them.

“This offers a real chance not just to halt soil degradation but to return damaged lands to agricultural use,”

- the statement said.

Similar solutions are already in use in regions of Russia that are most vulnerable to desertification. One such system, "Digital Agrochemist," is helping rehabilitate soil in Kalmykia, Dagestan, Volgograd, and Astrakhan regions. It collects and analyzes data from soil moisture sensors that monitor agro-meteorological conditions in real time. The structured data helps specialists develop targeted recovery strategies and prevent the spread of land degradation.

Desertification is a growing issue for farmers not only in Russia but worldwide, leading to shrinking farmland and food production challenges. Experts believe that domestic technologies like Verda could have a positive ripple effect on the global agricultural market.

The development of AI-driven systems for soil conservation and restoration is emerging as a key factor in the global fight against land desertification.
