Russian Software Brings Real-Time Online Control to Drilling Rigs

Engineers in Orenburg have created a monitoring system for drilling rigs that tracks dozens of parameters in real time, helping operators boost efficiency and reduce costly downtime.

Developers in Orenburg have introduced a unique program for monitoring drilling rigs. The ZBO Drill Control system continuously tracks drilling processes and quality. It is already used on rigs produced by the Orenburg Drilling Equipment Plant and can be adapted to other machines. The system records in real time the rotation speed, drill string weight, engine revolutions, and dozens of additional parameters, all displayed on the operator’s monitor.

“Right now, the monitor shows a rig working in Kuzbass, engaged in coal seam development. The cycle chart displays operating time, downtime, and other indicators. From this data, we can identify where drilling difficulties occur, why the rig is idling, and what ultimately causes production losses,” explained Pyotr Medvedev, head of the plant’s service department.

This level of analytics allows drilling to be precise down to the centimeter. According to the developers, similar tools have long been available for quarry equipment and have proven their effectiveness, but for drilling rigs this represents a new frontier.

“We can see, for example, that the drilling fluid consumption is above normal and recommend checking whether the flushing system is clogged. Or we might notice that an operator is applying too much force when the seam is very soft, and advise on how to proceed. Company specialists can even monitor operations online and make adjustments directly. The key point is that the tool helps cut losses and improve productivity in the mining industry,” the developer summarized.
