Russia Develops Augmented Reality Prosthetics

New technologies aim to eliminate phantom limb pain and help patients adapt to artificial limbs faster.

Russia is working on a new generation of prosthetics that combine augmented reality with biocompatible microelectrodes. The breakthrough was announced at the Eastern Economic Forum 2025 by Veronika Skvortsova, head of the Federal Medical-Biological Agency. These innovations are designed to dramatically improve the lives of people who have undergone limb amputations.

According to Izvestia, the work is moving forward on two key fronts. The first involves creating special microelectrodes implanted directly into nerve fibers. This technology restores the normal transmission of nerve impulses and can fully eliminate the debilitating phantom pains that affect most patients.

The second direction focuses on using virtual and augmented reality in rehabilitation. Patients wear a VR headset and see their intact limb in a digital environment. They can practice gripping objects, clapping, and performing other movements. This training helps the brain adapt, making it much easier for patients to use a real prosthesis once it is fitted.

Meanwhile, traditional prosthetics development is also advancing. State corporation Rostec recently unveiled Russia’s first domestic knee module with a manual lock for above-knee prostheses, designed to withstand loads of up to 125 kilograms (275 pounds).
