Russia’s Smart Home Cuts Energy Use by 12 Percent in a Typical Apartment

Yandex, together with environmental engineers, has shown that a standard smart home kit can substantially reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions—without requiring residents to change their daily habits.

Yandex and the Center for Environmental Research and Engineering (HPBS) conducted a unique experiment to measure the real impact of smart home technology in a standard Russian apartment of the P-44T panel series. The goal was to compare energy consumption levels under normal living conditions with and without automation.

The apartment was equipped with a basic kit: a hub, motion, temperature, and light sensors, smart lamps, and a thermostat. Importantly, the family did not change their habits. Savings were achieved solely through intelligent automation.

As a result, overall annual energy consumption fell by 12 percent. In specific categories the effect was even stronger: heating costs dropped by 14 percent, air conditioning by 58 percent, and lighting by 9 percent.

At the same time, the apartment’s carbon footprint decreased by 12 percent. The experiment demonstrates that smart home technology is more than just convenience—it is a genuine tool for energy efficiency and environmental protection.

Such automation is already available to households across Russia.
