Russian Developers Launch Digital Neurodiagnostics to Advance Brain Research

A new IT-based method from the Higher School of Economics uses 3D modeling, precise motion tracking, and big data analytics to study how the brain plans and executes movements.

The innovative approach, created at the Center for Neuroeconomics and Cognitive Research at the Higher School of Economics, applies 3D modeling to explore how the brain plans and carries out actions.

In experiments, volunteers interacted with objects produced on a 3D printer from digital models. Their movements were recorded with extreme precision by an infrared tracking system, while specialized software segmented each action into microphases for analysis.

Data processing revealed that the brain calculates and optimizes movement in advance, and that the complexity of a task directly influences the time required for planning.

The development could be valuable for rehabilitating patients with Parkinson’s disease or those recovering from strokes, bringing motor diagnostics to a new level of quality.

The system is a mobile unit that fits into a suitcase and can be used in any clinic to detect subtle abnormalities.
