Russia Uses Artificial Intelligence to Breed Valuable Fish Species

In Kostroma region, one of Russia’s largest sturgeon farms has introduced AI to monitor water quality and optimize fish growth, marking another step in the digital transformation of agriculture.

Digital tools are spreading across all areas of Russian agriculture, and fish farming is no exception. In the Kostroma region, one of the country’s largest sturgeon-breeding enterprises has deployed artificial intelligence to manage operations.

The farm also raises trout, sterlet, and carp, producing about 10 tons of black caviar and over 70 tons of other delicacies annually. The fish are raised in natural pond environments covering more than 12 hectares. AI has been tasked with monitoring all critical parameters of the ponds.

According to director Vyacheslav Baldin, the neural network oversees climate control. Every hour, it collects and transmits data on water temperature and oxygen levels. When conditions are optimized, the fish gain weight efficiently.

And that is only the beginning. Soon, AI will prepare balanced feed and deliver it to feeding stations, while also monitoring fish health using ultrasound diagnostics.
