Schools in the Moscow Region Become a Testbed for Intelligent BMS Solutions

Nearly a quarter of schools in the Moscow Region are already equipped with smart lighting systems. In practice, these requirements are now built into project specifications at the design stage for new educational facilities.

If 18% of schools in the region used automated lighting systems in 2024, that share reached 23% by the end of 2025. DAO GROUP reported these figures.

These deployments go beyond consumer-grade solutions such as smart bulbs controlled via voice assistants or mobile apps. Instead, they rely on full-scale Building Management Systems (BMS) that integrate occupancy and daylight sensors, dimmable lighting, multiple operating scenarios, and control via open protocols.

According to assessments conducted in 2024–2025, smart lighting has reduced energy consumption by 20–40%. The impact extends beyond cost savings. Research shows that adjustable lighting, including spectrum tuning and daylight simulation, improves well-being, productivity, emotional state, and comfort for both students and teachers.

Growth Drivers

Experts expect the share of schools equipped with smart lighting in the Moscow Region to reach 40% by early 2027. One reason for the rapid rollout is that these systems are already included in technical specifications in 30% of new school construction projects.

A logical next step is to integrate lighting into broader smart building frameworks. In practice, BMS will not only control lighting levels and switching but also manage other parameters, including ventilation and heating.

This integration is likely to increase demand for system components. Smart schools will adapt indoor environments based on class schedules and seasonal changes, improving operational efficiency and comfort.

From Karelia to Tyumen: How the Trend Evolved

Smart lighting systems are being deployed beyond the Moscow Region. In the second half of 2020, Rostelecom upgraded lighting in 30 public facilities in Karelia, replacing legacy fixtures with LED systems equipped with motion sensors in schools, hospitals, and fire service buildings in the Loukhi and Pitkyaranta districts.

During the same period, Vega Concern, part of the Roselektronika holding, upgraded lighting in nine schools in Chelyabinsk. The deployment of smart sensors reduced energy consumption by 40%.

In 2023, new schools in Tyumen were equipped with the AVADA hardware and software platform, which automatically adjusts lighting levels in classrooms depending on time of day, weather conditions, or lesson content, for example dimming lights during video presentations.

Schools as a Launchpad for Building Digitalization

Adoption rates of smart lighting in schools in the Moscow Region point to a broader increase in intelligent building systems across Russia. At the policy level, authorities recognize that such systems deliver fast payback and measurable economic benefits while improving comfort for occupants.

The trend also stands out for its clear and quantifiable economics, with cost reductions of 20–40%. That makes smart lighting a practical entry point for wider BMS deployment. It also supports steady demand for domestically developed hardware and software.

In the coming years, the segment is likely to grow steadily, driven by both school renovation projects and new construction. Standardization will be required to scale these systems nationwide. Proven technologies may also find demand in CIS countries and other partner markets.

Automation of lighting systems marks the second phase of the energy efficiency revolution. It is an industry-wide trend driven by regulatory requirements, rising electricity tariffs, and strong market demand to reduce operating costs. No one wants to overpay, especially where technology already allows savings to be achieved easily and without disruption. As a result, the share of automated energy-efficient lighting continues to grow across all project categories
