Russian Smart Cameras Turn Their Lens on Africa
AI-powered video analytics from NtechLab, a Rostekh technology partner, are already deployed across more than 70 regions in Russia and 34 countries – and now the company is expanding into South Africa with a new retail rollout.

NtechLab’s IT products, developed in partnership with Rostekh, are used in more than 70 regions across Russia and in 34 countries worldwide. The company continues to expand internationally and has recently launched its video analytics system in a major shopping mall in South Africa.
Over more than a decade in neural network development, NtechLab has built extensive expertise in advanced systems for recognizing faces, human silhouettes, and vehicles. The company is a leading player in Russia and competes globally. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology has ranked its facial recognition algorithm as the most accurate in the world for identity verification based on biometric data.
Russian AI Goes Global
In fractions of a second, the software processes hundreds of thousands of video streams. In India, 470 smart cameras powered by NtechLab are already monitoring railway safety across a network that carries around eight billion passengers annually. The system helps locate suspects and missing persons and can identify up to 50 individuals within a single frame.
Now the technology has reached South Africa. There, the neural network analyzes camera feeds to count visitors in a shopping mall and alert staff when foot traffic peaks require additional personnel. It can also flag rule violations, such as unauthorized access to restricted areas or breaches of sanitary standards by employees. In practice, the system acts as both a security assistant and a data engine – enabling further analytics, including insights into where customers spend the most time – data that can be monetized.

Among the Most Accurate
More than 25 percent of the company’s revenue now comes from international projects. Russian AI is in demand because it delivers measurable results. NtechLab’s technology is used on a digital taxi platform in Saudi Arabia to distinguish legitimate account holders from fraudsters. The company is also planning deployments in Algeria’s agriculture and transport sectors, including installing smart cameras at airports. In Morocco, facial recognition technology could be introduced ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
“Our facial recognition and video analytics technologies proved their effectiveness during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. NtechLab’s AI-based system is recognized as one of the most accurate in the world,” said CEO Alexey Palamarchuk.

Expanding Opportunities
“NtechLab solutions are widely used across many partner countries. South Africa is a new market for us and significantly expands the footprint of Russian video analytics. We see strong potential for using AI technologies in the country and are already exploring applications not only in security but also in improving everyday urban experiences,” said Sergey Titov, Director of International Business at NtechLab.
South Africa could become a gateway to the broader African market. If Russian video analytics can handle the scale and load of a major shopping mall, it is ready to expand into logistics, transport security, and urban infrastructure across neighboring countries. The region needs software that improves order and delivers economic value.

A single successful deployment could lead to contracts across entire retail networks and eventually into adjacent industries. Facial recognition is already widely used across multiple sectors. Russian video analytics is not only developing advanced technologies but also exporting them – both within domestic ecosystems and in competitive global markets.
