Tatarstan to Deploy One of Russia’s Largest Agro-Meteorological Networks

A pilot project has begun with the installation of smart weather stations in 25 districts, providing farmers with real-time forecasts to boost crop yields.

The Republic of Tatarstan is set to host one of Russia’s largest networks of smart meteorological stations. Each unit is equipped with sensors that measure temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, precipitation levels, and ultraviolet radiation. The data is transmitted in real time to farmers’ personal accounts via a web interface or mobile app. Built-in batteries keep the devices running autonomously for up to nine months.

Certified equipment has already demonstrated forecasting accuracy of up to 95% several days in advance. This intelligent monitoring system will help farmers optimize fieldwork, leading to higher crop yields.

The Information and Computing Center of Tatarstan’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food, in partnership with Rostelecom, has launched the large-scale pilot project. In the first stage, equipment has been installed in 25 districts, and by the end of 2025, more than 100 stations will be in place. The initiative will be one of the most extensive in Russia in terms of agro-meteorological sensor coverage.

Smart weather stations have already been used in Russia’s environmental sector for years. For example, the Strazhnik research complex monitors forest conditions across thousands of hectares, measuring air temperature, soil moisture, and other parameters. It combines meteorological stations, ground-based monitoring sites, and remote sensing data arrays.
