Shah Syed Azaz Hussain: AI Will Not Replace Reporters on the Ground

The Second Global Digital Forum has come to a close in Moscow. Over three days, participants discussed how to develop digital services and strengthen technological independence. One of the topics was the role of artificial intelligence in the digital environment.

Shah Syed Azaz Hussain, a journalist from Pakistan, spoke to a correspondent for the IT Russia media platform about how AI is changing journalists’ work and why it cannot replace reporters on the ground.

– It is a great honor for me to visit your country. Coming here has changed my opinion of Russia, because Western media tend to portray it in a certain way. But I have seen that things are different here: people are very friendly and look after me.

I think forums like this should be held regularly. I have met some interesting people here. I am confident that these kinds of meetings will lead to the development of new, useful tools.

As for artificial intelligence, it is a very important tool today because digital information flows are growing rapidly. We are constantly receiving news, and journalists use AI in their work, for example, to translate content. It also serves as an aid when preparing news stories.

Meanwhile, I believe AI will not be able to replace reporters who are right in the middle of events. It may replace people who work behind desks and produce content, perhaps camera operators. But it will not replace reporters who gather information themselves. They need to meet people and learn their stories. That is why artificial intelligence will not be able to replace journalists who report directly from the field.
