MegaFon Upgrades Networks Around Pereslavl-Zalessky
Russian telecom operator MegaFon has modernized network infrastructure near the historic city of Pereslavl-Zalessky, installing new equipment that increased mobile data speeds by about 20%. The upgrade reflects a broader push by Russian telecom providers to strengthen connectivity along major tourism corridors, where seasonal spikes in traffic place heavy demands on network capacity.

One of the priority areas for Russian telecom operators is upgrading infrastructure in tourism destinations. These locations experience particularly heavy network loads because large numbers of users gather in relatively small areas. As a result, operators must continuously improve equipment to maintain stable service.
Faster Connectivity for Tourists and Residents
MegaFon recently completed a modernization project near the city of Pereslavl-Zalessky. The main objective was to accelerate the performance of the 4G network. To achieve this, new equipment was installed in the Nikitskaya and Troitskaya settlements, located on both sides of the M-8 highway at the entrance to the city. The upgrade covered not only well-known religious landmarks – including the 19th-century Trinity Church and the Nikitsky Monastery complex with its churches, bell towers, and chapels dating from the 16th and 17th centuries – but also nearby residential areas with private housing.
According to the operator, network speeds increased by at least 20%. As a result, tens of thousands of tourists traveling through cities of Russia’s Golden Ring route will be able to exchange messages, photos, and video more quickly. Average mobile internet speeds in the area now reach at least 40 Mbps.

Traffic Demand Continues to Grow
“Pereslavl-Zalessky attracts travelers from across the country, so we began preparing for the tourist season well in advance. When spring arrives, the number of visitors to this Golden Ring city increases two to three times. Our analysts studied traffic patterns across different parts of the city and identified zones with particularly high network load. Engineers then launched new telecom sites that increased mobile internet speeds for both residents and visitors,” explained Sergey Timonin, MegaFon’s regional director for the Yaroslavl region.
It is worth noting that this is far from the first telecom upgrade along the Golden Ring route. Improved mobile internet service has also been introduced in the Pereslavl district along the M-8 highway near the village of Kulakovo and the settlement of Ivanovskoye by Lake Vashutinskoye. These new telecom facilities expanded network capacity and strengthened 4G coverage across the area.
In 2024, MegaFon also carried out a large-scale modernization program aimed at improving network quality directly in the historic center of Pereslavl-Zalessky.

Expanding Redundant Capacity
Telecom networks are also being upgraded in other locations that attract large numbers of travelers. At the end of February, operator Rostelecom completed construction of a rezervnaya volokonno-opticheskaya liniya svyazi (backup fiber-optic communication line) in the Arkhyz resort area of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic. The new line provides bandwidth of 10 Gbit/s. Engineers laid approximately 50 kilometers of fiber cable from the settlement of Nizhnyaya Ermolovka to the Romantik tourist complex. This infrastructure adds redundancy in case primary communication lines fail. If unexpected disruptions occur, subscribers – including many tourists – can be automatically switched to the backup channel without any loss in service quality.
“The completed project to build a backup fiber-optic line in Arkhyz represents an important step toward improving the reliability and resilience of the resort’s digital infrastructure,” said Roman Zavyazkin, director of Rostelecom’s Stavropol branch.
Large-Scale Upgrades Across Siberia
Major modernization projects are also underway in Siberia. In the summer of 2025, telecom operator T2 carried out extensive work to improve connectivity across vast territories from Omsk to Tuva. The company installed additional equipment and upgraded network infrastructure in historic city centers, popular resorts, and natural tourist attractions. Even in remote locations, travelers now have access to high-speed 4G connectivity. In Omsk and Tomsk, the operator concentrated upgrades in historic districts that attract the largest number of visitors.

It is clear that modernization of telecom infrastructure in Russia’s tourism zones will continue. Improved network coverage will not only ensure stable connectivity for travelers but also support the development of new digital services such as virtual tour guides.
