Russian AI System Targets Global Phone Scammers

A newly patented neural network can track the physical devices behind mass fraud calls — and could reshape how telecoms fight cybercrime.

Russian tech firm SoftTime has developed and patented an AI-driven system designed to locate the devices criminals use for large-scale phone scams. The technology identifies so-called SIM boxes — machines originally intended for testing telecom networks that fraudsters repurpose for automated calls, spam campaigns, and network breaches.

According to the company, the system uses a neural network to analyze dozens of signal parameters in real time, pinpointing the exact locations of fraudulent devices. SoftTime says the approach is far more effective than existing traffic-monitoring methods used by telecom operators.

A Cheaper Way to Stop a Costly Crime

The company estimates that deploying the new technology across Russia’s largest cities would cost five times less than the country’s annual financial losses from phone scams targeting citizens and businesses. The developers argue the system could become a strategic tool for national cybersecurity, reducing fraud before it reaches consumers.

SoftTime has already secured a Russian patent and plans to apply for international protection, emphasizing that SIM-box fraud is a global problem. With telecom scams costing billions worldwide each year, the firm believes its homegrown AI could become a key export in the fight against digital crime.
