Russian Scientists Develop Interactive Map to Assess Learning Progress of Students With Intellectual Disabilities

Researchers in Russia have developed an interactive digital map designed to evaluate the learning progress of students with intellectual disabilities. The tool allows educators and specialists to identify students’ strengths and challenges, determine which skills are easier for them to master and develop personalized teaching recommendations.

The digital resource was created at the Institute of Special Education (Institut korrektsionnoy pedagogiki), a research institution operating under the Russian Ministry of Education. Using the interactive map, teachers can assess the knowledge of first-year students studying under the Federal Adapted General Education Program and develop recommendations for instructional content and teaching methods tailored to each learner.

Individualization at the Core

The map was developed by a team that included research staff from the institute, special education teachers and educators from multiple regions across Russia. Teachers can access the map and begin using it directly through the institute’s website. According to the development team, all materials are designed to support students with intellectual disabilities throughout the learning process. The interactive map allows educators to evaluate not only academic outcomes but also students’ personal development.

Identifying Learning Gaps

Educators can use the tool to assess learning outcomes and determine how effective the educational process has been. The collected data helps teachers identify gaps in knowledge, design new corrective learning tasks and select teaching strategies that better match each student’s needs.

The credibility of the project is reinforced by the reputation of its developers. The Institute of Special Education employs about 70 specialists and serves as Russia’s leading research center for defectology and special education studies. The institute includes nine research laboratories, five academic departments, the V.P. Kashchenko Center for the Development of Scientific Research in Special Education and more than one thousand experimental educational sites across the country. The development of the interactive map represents a practical example of how digital tools can support correctional pedagogy and inclusive education.

A New Level of Educational Organization

The new tool is expected to improve the quality of education for students with intellectual disabilities. By providing more precise diagnostic information, it allows specialists to select teaching methods and instructional approaches that deliver stronger learning outcomes. At the same time, the platform gives educators practical support when working with students who have special educational needs.

In the future, the Institute of Special Education’s solution could be deployed widely in correctional schools and inclusive classrooms. The tool could also be integrated with educational platforms and school monitoring systems. With further development, the digital solution may also become an exportable product for countries whose educational standards are similar to Russia’s. Comparable examples already exist. The learning platform Uchi.ru, for instance, operates an international version and is used outside Russia.

Inclusive education is not only about schools. It reflects what kind of society we want to build: one that is closed and wary of anyone who falls outside what is considered ‘normal,’ or one that is humane and able to accept and support people who are different. Inclusion is not about ‘them’ – it is about all of us. No one is immune to changes in life, and it is essential that society has working systems of support and participation from early childhood, including through the school system
