The invention aims to help respond more effectively to the aftermath of industrial accidents.

In Russia, a high school student from Volgodonsk has introduced a robotic project designed to mitigate the consequences of industrial accidents involving oil spills. His work underscores that viable engineering solutions can emerge not only from research institutes, but also from school laboratories.

Fuel Oil Spills No Longer a Threat

Young inventor Boris Putrin developed a robotic system intended to address oil contamination on water. The idea took shape after reports of an environmental accident near Anapa in late 2024.

The robot is mounted on a vessel and uses software controls to distribute sorbent plates across the water’s surface. Once the plates absorb the oil film, the boat retrieves them for disposal. The project received high marks from experts and won first place at a competition organized by the Donskaya Akademiya Yunykh Issledovateley (Don Academy of Young Researchers).

Putrin’s interest in technology began in childhood, when hobbies in amateur radio and robotics gradually evolved into more advanced engineering work. This is not his first project. He previously presented a finishing robot designed to clad walls in spent fuel storage pools at nuclear power plants.

His new goal for the year is to build a firefighting robot that, according to his concept, would extinguish blazes in hard-to-reach areas and remote settlements.

A System Built to Support Talent

Teachers say that an early focus on STEM subjects helps teenagers pursue engineering careers with confidence, while the school’s career guidance system allows students to test technical specialties before entering university. As a result, interest in engineering degrees has been gradually rising, with many graduates securing state-funded university places.

Putrin’s story illustrates how a structured support system can help children turn curiosity into a future profession. A new generation of specialists is emerging - one comfortable working with advanced technologies - and, educators argue, the task of the state and society is to provide them with sustained support.
