Saint Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation is developing next-generation hardware designed for high-speed data transmission in space. Prototype systems are currently being tested using existing component bases, but the developers say production units will be built entirely on printed circuit boards manufactured in Russia.

“We have already launched the process of developing hardware based on our own component base. The boards are being designed, and the enclosures will also be produced at the university. In other words, the final product ready for market release is being developed almost entirely in-house,” said Valentin Olenev, director of the university’s Aerospace Research and Development Center.

The devices are designed to enable communication between systems within a satellite and across different spacecraft. In effect, they function as a space-based equivalent of a terrestrial computer network. Three “bridge” adapters have already been developed, allowing legacy systems to interface with new high-speed standards. The devices are expected to enter the market in the future.
