Transport Ministry to Use AI to Predict Flood Impacts
The system is expected to support emergency responders in managing flood damage.

Russia’s Ministry of Transport plans to develop an artificial intelligence system to help specialists predict the potential impact of floods. The project is being led by the ministry’s Situational Information Center.
The initiative addresses a recurring challenge: Russia experiences between 40 and 70 flood events each year, many of which threaten transport infrastructure.
The planned AI-based hydrology system is expected to be integrated with the MCHS Atlas opasnostey i riskov (Hazards and Risks Atlas system). Once a flood begins, the system will immediately identify potential inundation zones and overlay them onto maps of transport infrastructure. It will not only track the situation but also generate forecasts of how it may evolve. In particular, the algorithm will produce a list of road sections where traffic could be disrupted or fully blocked.
