AI to Help Russian Geneticists Manage Poultry Breeding
Artificial intelligence tools could also extend the reproductive lifespan of laying hens.
Russian scientists are actively using artificial intelligence to develop genomic and post-genomic breeding approaches. The technologies are expected to help poultry producers influence the sex of newly hatched chicks and extend the reproductive period of laying hens. Mikhail Nasibulin, CEO of the LIFT Research Center, outlined the work at the IV Future Technologies Forum.
According to Nasibulin, the center’s expertise in genetics and bioinformatics is being applied not only in medicine but also in the agro-industrial sector.
AI to Support Sex Selection in Poultry Breeding
“We have received several requests from colleagues in this sector, and we are now working together on applied projects in this field. For example, we are implementing a large-scale project to study the molecular mechanisms of embryo hibernation, which will allow us to control the sex of chicks at the time of hatching,” Nasibulin said.
He noted that close cooperation with an industrial partner plays a central role in the project. The partner participates directly in experiments and integrates research results into industrial practice. AI technologies are being actively used to analyze genomic data and support precise breeding decisions.
Extending the ‘Maternity Leave’ of Laying Hens
Similar approaches are being applied in other poultry projects aimed at maximizing the reproductive lifespan of laying hens. Nasibulin said these initiatives have generated strong interest from Russian agribusiness, with companies willing to invest in such research. That interest, he added, highlights the practical value of genomic and AI technologies in agriculture.
