Digital Systems Take Control of Water Supply in Russia

The country is actively rolling out digital technologies across the housing and utilities sector.

Starting in 2026, Russia’s Leningrad Region is set to deploy a digital monitoring and metering system across water supply networks. The system will be able to detect leaks in real time. The earlier a malfunction is identified, the faster corrective measures can be taken, improving the overall reliability of the network.

Smart Meters and Tzyfrovye Vodokanaly

Russia is actively introducing digital technologies in the housing and utilities sector. “Smart” initiatives are helping optimize water supply, improve efficiency, and prevent коммунальные accidents.

One example is an IoT platform developed by mobile operator MegaFon, which monitors water distribution and consumption. Using smart metering devices, the system determines actual volumes of water supplied, monitors quality, detects pipe bursts and illegal connections, and can even manage pumping stations autonomously. Rosatom’s “Tzyfrovye Vodokanaly” (“digital water utilities”), already operating in many Russian cities, are reducing water losses. In the city of Glazov, for instance, a digital solution from Rosatom cut emergency response times from three to four days to just a few hours.

Efficient Resource Accounting

Softel has introduced a modular system that analyzes water consumption, identifies anomalies, and helps prevent accidents. Digital twins have optimized the operation of water supply systems, reducing water leakage by up to 40 percent.

Experts note that while the global community is still studying Russia’s experience, domestic developers have repeatedly demonstrated that digital transformation of the housing and utilities sector is not a distant future but a present reality. These technologies are helping save millions of cubic meters of water and billions of rubles.
