Digital Technologies in Russia Are Making the Air Cleaner
Emissions at oil and gas fields are falling as companies roll out digital management systems.

Russia’s largest petrochemical company, SiburTyumenGaz, has improved its environmental performance by deploying digital technologies. The new tools have boosted energy efficiency and optimized gas-processing capacity, cutting air pollution by 13 percent over the past year.
The automated system EKONS (Ekologicheskiy Kontrol i Nablyudenie, Environmental Control and Monitoring) has been rolled out since 2018. It does more than track key production metrics – using a digital model, it also assesses how those indicators affect the company’s overall economics.
Managing Environmental Impact
According to the company, an operator can see, within seconds, how a technological process is running, what parameters can be adjusted, and how to make it more efficient. By keeping operations within a “green zone,” scientists improve energy efficiency, which in turn reduces the environmental footprint.
As a result, SiburTyumenGaz has cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent in the gas-processing segment alone.
