Energomash Launches Reverse Engineering Hub as 3D Technologies Help Russia’s Power Sector Replace Sanctioned Components

Energomash has opened a new production unit at its plant in Chekhov, outside Moscow, dedicated to reverse engineering large industrial components for nuclear and thermal power plants.

The project is part of a broader import substitution and modernization strategy at the enterprise, which belongs to a major Russian industrial holding company.

From Scanning to Prototype in Days

Reverse engineering at Energomash begins with 3D scanning of a component that has either been discontinued or can no longer be imported into Russia because of sanctions. The scanner creates an exact digital replica of the part, after which engineers analyze its geometry, hardness, wear level, mechanical properties and chemical composition. Based on that data, the team prepares technical documentation, selects materials and develops a manufacturing process.

The final stage involves creating a mock-up or prototype using a 3D printer. The entire engineering chain, from measurement to finished prototype, can be completed directly at a customer site anywhere in Russia. In practice, that allows engineers to cut development timelines dramatically, reduce pilot-production costs and quickly modify designs when needed.

Restoring Critical Infrastructure

For the power sector, especially nuclear generation, access to spare parts is not simply a commercial issue – it directly affects operational safety and continuity. Many components produced during the Soviet era are no longer manufactured, while imported alternatives have become unavailable. Reverse engineering makes it possible not only to recreate lost parts, but also to adapt them to modern requirements using Russian materials and production technologies.

The plant specializes in high-pressure pipeline valves, including shutoff, protective, safety and control systems. Those products are critical for nuclear and thermal power plants, as well as facilities in the oil and gas and chemical industries.

By launching the new reverse engineering unit, Energomash is doing more than covering immediate supply needs. The company is also expanding its own product portfolio while strengthening the technological independence of Russia’s energy sector.

Market Demand Continues to Grow

The company recently hosted a hands-on seminar attended by representatives from more than 50 organizations, including Rosatom and Rosenergoatom. Guests were shown the capabilities of 3D scanning and modeling using a vintage automobile as a demonstration platform, highlighting how the technology can solve complex industrial problems.

In 2025, revenue from products supplied to nuclear power plants increased by 47% to 1.71 billion rubles including VAT (about $21.8 million), up from the previous year. In 2026, revenue is expected to climb further to 2.3 billion rubles (about $29.3 million), while total revenue is projected to reach 5.5 billion rubles (about $70 million) by 2028.

Ensuring Technological Sovereignty

The launch of the reverse engineering unit is a key part of the company’s long-term industrial strategy. Energomash is reinvesting earnings into production expansion and automation, procurement of advanced equipment and materials, and the creation of new jobs. Import substitution is increasingly becoming a practical industrial framework that supports the resilience of Russia’s entire energy supply chain.

Industrial technological sovereignty depends not only on the ability to recreate components, but also on the ability to improve and localize even highly complex systems quickly, accurately and without critical dependence on foreign suppliers. This case shows that Russian manufacturers are prepared not only to withstand sanctions pressure, but also to turn those constraints into opportunities for industrial and technological growth.

We plan to enter new markets, diversify our product range, digitize business processes, optimize production facilities and logistics flows, as well as increase competitiveness and build a more efficient management system
