First Locomotive on Russia’s BAM Railway Gains Digital Eyes

Engineers are testing machine-vision technology on the Tynda–Verkhnezeisk section of the Baikal–Amur Mainline as part of preparations for autonomous train operations.

In Russia’s Amur region, specialists have tested machine-vision technology on the Baikal–Amur Mainline, known as BAM, along the Tynda–Verkhnezeisk section. The first diesel locomotive on the route has been equipped with specialized monitoring systems, marking a step toward autonomous train movement on the railway, according to the industry newspaper Gudok.

Cameras on the Windshield

According to Dmitry Chekunov, chief technologist at the Tynda-Severnaya service locomotive depot, the automated system includes several observation cameras installed in the driver’s cab. The setup consists of three compact devices measuring roughly 20 by 30 centimeters. They are mounted on the windshield, helping monitor the surrounding environment without blocking the view of the driver or assistant. Installing the cameras is straightforward and takes about an hour and a half.

The experimental obstacle-detection technology has performed well in the challenging conditions of the BAM route. The software processes incoming data, scans the surrounding space, and identifies nearby objects. It also determines whether the track ahead is clear and analyzes the dimensions of nearby structures and the condition of railway infrastructure.

Detecting Dangerous Sections

The technology operates around the clock—both day and night—which is critical for railway operations. It can also detect hazardous sections even during heavy snowfall. The driver receives advance warnings about obstacles and can quickly decide how to proceed.

Engineers are now studying the possibility of operating freight trains without a driver on board.

Earlier reports noted that “eyes” for an autonomous train were recently demonstrated in Moscow.
