Russia has developed an innovative corrosion monitoring system for industrial facilities, according to researchers at South Ural State University. The technology tracks the condition of equipment by analyzing ultrasonic pulses.

The system can be used in oil refining, the chemical industry, transport, shipbuilding, and municipal infrastructure. According to the developers, it delivers more accurate and stable monitoring under demanding operating conditions.

Up to 600 Degrees

The prototype has completed testing and has already been deployed at industrial enterprises. It can detect changes in material thickness at the level of just a few microns, with minimal error. The mechanism accounts for the effect of temperature on the speed of ultrasonic wave propagation and can be used at facilities operating at temperatures of up to 600 degrees Celsius. Measurement intervals range from several minutes to one hour.

With the new system in place, plant personnel no longer need to approach hazardous equipment. Monitoring is carried out entirely remotely, and the data generated by the system is used to forecast when repairs or equipment replacement may be required.
