The finals of the 49th International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) took place in Baku, where students from 103 countries competed for the title of the world’s best programmers.

The absolute champions were the SPbSU Polar Bear Transform team from St. Petersburg State University, composed of Leonid Danilevich, Maxim Turevsky, and Fedor Ushakov. Over five hours of competition, the Russian students brilliantly solved 11 out of 12 of the toughest algorithmic problems, leaving no chance for their rivals. The University of Tokyo placed second, while Peking University came in third.

Stanislav Smirnov, academic supervisor of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, emphasized that the university’s mathematicians and programmers combine deep theoretical knowledge with strong practical application skills.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the students, noting that their victory proves the country’s mathematical education and computer science training remain at a world-class level.
