Russia Develops Homegrown Software for Offshore Seismic Exploration

Scientists from Moscow have created the first Russian software system for offshore oil and gas seismic surveys—offering a fully domestic alternative to Western tools.

Russia has unveiled its first domestically developed software for oil and gas companies, aimed at supporting offshore seismic exploration. Developed by researchers at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), the expert system simulates acoustic signal source arrays used in geophysical surveys, CNews reports.

This new technology serves as a full replacement for previously used Western programs and is expected to become a key component in marine exploration software suites.

Russia’s continental shelf is the largest in the world, spanning over 6 million square kilometers. While its full resource potential remains unknown, interest in its development continues to grow. With British and Norwegian software no longer available, the creation of a Russian alternative marks a strategic milestone. The system could also attract interest from foreign energy sectors.

Seismic exploration, first introduced in the mid-20th century, remains the primary method for locating hydrocarbon deposits—and this new Russian solution positions itself as a future-ready platform for domestic and global markets.
