Russia Has Created a Universal Transformer Robot for Industry

Russian researchers have developed a universal modular robot capable of switching between tracked and wheeled modes, allowing it to adapt to complex industrial tasks and operate in highly demanding environments.

A Modular Platform for Industrial Flexibility

Scientists from the Saint Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation have unveiled a universal robot whose design can be easily reconfigured for a wide range of industrial applications. This modular platform is capable of functioning in diverse conditions, meeting the growing demand for mobile, multifunctional systems in modern industry.

The uniqueness of the development lies in its hybrid propulsion system, combining both tracked and wheeled movement options in a single unit, according to TASS. The robot is built from interchangeable modules, simplifying assembly and maintenance while enabling rapid adaptation to specific industrial needs. Engineers can equip the platform with various tools, including a manipulator arm, photo or video cameras, a thermal imager, or a special container for transporting cargo.

From Metallurgy to Logistics

Such robots help automate processes in complex and dynamic environments, reducing the need for direct human involvement in monotonous or potentially hazardous operations.

A prototype has already been deployed at a copper cathode production facility, where the robot successfully performs diagnostics by detecting short circuits between electrodes. This level of flexibility opens the door to widespread adoption across other industries—from metallurgy and mechanical engineering to logistics and the maintenance of critical infrastructure.
