Russia Is Developing a Smart Onboard Data Recorder for Vehicles
Researchers are building machine learning and AI software to analyze transport data.

An intelligent onboard data recorder for vehicles is being developed by researchers. The project is being carried out at Ufa State Petroleum Technological University.
Specialists from the Department of Operation of Ground Transport in the Oil and Gas Industry and Construction are working on a hardware-and-software system that will make it possible to quickly analyze test results and adjust vehicle designs.
Cheaper, More Efficient, and Easier to Use
The device can detect detonation processes in an engine and record operating parameters of the engine and other mechatronic systems over long periods. This capability makes it unique, said project leader and head of the ENT department at the university, Sergey Kinyov.
The development is expected to be cheaper than foreign alternatives and, where possible, will be produced using domestically made components. Researchers have already tested a prototype model, and software developers are now joining the project. The data analysis software, based on machine learning and artificial intelligence, will be able to process large volumes of information and significantly reduce processing time.
The onboard data recorder could be used by vehicle manufacturers and developers, research institutes, universities, and even racing drivers.
