In Russia, AI Is Used to Monitor Cleaning in Apartment Buildings

Artificial intelligence prevents cleaning work from being reported as fulfilled when no work was actually done.

Residents of an apartment building in Moscow have deployed an artificial intelligence-based system that automatically records whether stairwells are cleaned and assesses the quality of the work. The project shows how computer vision can be used to improve transparency in Russia’s housing and utilities sector.

The initiative came from residents themselves, who had faced irregular cleaning services. To address the problem, they opted for a practical and low-cost technological solution. The system relies on existing CCTV cameras in the building, which were connected to a dedicated algorithm, according to local outlet Krylatskoye.ru.

AI Sees Everything

The artificial intelligence analyzes video feeds in real time. The algorithm is trained to recognize when a cleaner appears on camera and to log not only the fact that work took place, but also the exact time and the specific area cleaned. As a result, it is no longer possible to mark a service as completed in reports if it was not actually performed. Residents now have a clear, evidence-based tool for dialogue with the building’s management company.

The example illustrates how accessible AI technologies can be adapted to solve everyday problems. Similar approaches could be replicated in other countries facing challenges in monitoring and optimizing municipal and communal services.
