Russian Students Embrace Digital Technologies in Gas Service Operations
University leaders and industrial partners met in St. Petersburg to discuss modernizing engineering education.
Participants at a meeting in St. Petersburg discussed emerging priorities in Russia’s engineering education sector. Executives from major companies and university faculty shared views on how to train specialists capable of driving a technological breakthrough.
One example that speakers said could be scaled nationwide comes from Gazprom Mezhregiongaz Engineering, a company that provides specialized services for energy supply organizations. It operates what it describes as a full-fledged “digital factory,” developing innovative tools such as a unified control center for telemetry systems, automated fleet monitoring platforms, and information and control systems for maintenance and repairs. The company is also actively working on deploying intelligent gas metering systems, with the sector expected to be fully digitized in the near future.
Industry specialists are passing this experience on to future engineers. Speaking at the session titled “Heritage and Continuity in Engineering Education,” Gennady Petrov, first deputy CEO of Gazprom Mezhregiongaz Engineering, said that “the foundation of successful training for a modern engineer is a balanced combination of theory and practice.”
Learning by Doing
The company has also signed an agreement with the St. Petersburg Mining University to support students in mastering the specifics of working at the intersection of IT and engineering science through hands-on training.
