Russia to Launch World's First Generation IV Nuclear Power Complex by 2030

The facility, built on cutting-edge fast neutron technology, aims to redefine the global nuclear energy landscape

Russia is poised to make a landmark leap in nuclear energy with the launch of the world's first Generation IV nuclear power complex in 2030. The facility, developed by Rosatom, will run on fast neutron technology and serve as a new technological platform for the future of nuclear power.

Located in Seversk, Tomsk Region, the plant is being constructed as part of Russia’s strategic 'Proryv' (Breakthrough) project. Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin was recently briefed on the progress by Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev. The complex will feature the BREST-OD-300, a 300-megawatt fast-neutron reactor cooled by lead, and will fully implement a closed nuclear fuel cycle.

The site will also include an on-site fuel plant, designed to handle the entire nuclear cycle—from reprocessing irradiated fuel to manufacturing new fuel. This integration is expected to dramatically enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

By advancing the Proryv project, Russia aims to solidify its position as a global leader in next-generation nuclear technology, offering a viable blueprint for the future of atomic energy.
