Russia Unveils Digital Strategy for Nuclear Industry

At World Nuclear Week, Rosatom outlined a sweeping plan for digital transformation, with artificial intelligence, robotics, and a new generation of IT talent at its core.

Russia’s nuclear sector, a new digital strategy is being rolled out — and it could reshape how the industry operates for decades to come.

Rosatom’s Chief Information and Digital Officer, Evgeny Abakumov, described three pillars of the initiative. First, the creation of digital twins — AI-driven models of production processes that allow engineers to simulate and optimize operations before a single reactor is built. Second, large-scale deployment of robotics and predictive analytics to make current facilities safer and more efficient. And third, aggressive investment in workforce development to ensure Russia has the specialists capable of delivering on these ambitions.

The plan is not confined to the nuclear sector. Abakumov highlighted projects in wind energy, Arctic exploration, advanced materials, and quantum computing, framing them as proof that Rosatom is positioning itself as a global technology player.

To secure fresh talent, Rosatom is launching a flagship career program: the “AtomicHack 3.0” hackathon. Selection rounds will run online and in person across five Russian cities, with the grand finale set for October 23–24 in Nizhny Novgorod at the IT CORE 2025 forum. There, young developers will compete to offer solutions for the industry’s most pressing digital challenges.

Beyond the technology and recruitment, Rosatom’s leadership underscored the mission behind the push: advancing Russia’s technological sovereignty and ensuring national security while contributing to cleaner, more sustainable energy worldwide.
