Roselektronika, a holding within the state conglomerate Rostec, has developed an automated bird-strike prevention system for airlines. The technology was successfully tested at Pulkovo Airport.

According to the International Civil Aviation Organization, about 5,400 bird strikes involving aircraft occur worldwide each year. The highest risk comes during takeoff and landing. Bird-control systems are designed to reduce the likelihood of such collisions.

All Data on a Digital Map

The system tracks the altitude, speed, and flight paths of up to 100 birds within a 10-kilometer radius, company representatives said. The information is displayed on a digital map in real time.

The platform also automatically controls bird-deterrent devices, reducing the workload on airport staff. The ornithological system, known as ORNI, operates around the clock and in all weather conditions. The solution is fully safe, the company says, because it does not generate its own radio emissions.

Earlier, we reported that St. Petersburg’s airport had launched an upgraded control center responsible for coordinating all apron operations.
