Russian Regions Are Building Digital Twins of Their Energy Systems

The “Digital Energy Region” project in Chuvashia aims to boost reliability and sustainability of electricity supply by creating a live digital replica of the grid.

Developers of the Digital Energy Region have begun preliminary surveys of more than 100 power grid facilities in Chuvashia, which will be integrated into a unified digital platform.

The project has been unfolding in stages since 2022. In 2026, design and research work is planned, and by 2027 a “digital shadow” of the region will be created to reflect the real-time operation of the energy system. By 2031, a full-fledged “digital twin” capable of managing the grid is expected.

Artificial intelligence and telemetry technologies will make it possible to automatically track failures and reroute energy without user reports. This will reduce outage recovery times by 20% and lower electricity losses.

Digital twin technology is being adopted across Russia—not just in utilities. In Tatarstan, for example, a digital copy of the republic’s capital has already been created, and the project is expanding regionwide. Meanwhile, researchers at Novosibirsk State University are applying digital models in microelectronics production.
