A new algorithm powered by “smart meters” helps mining companies pinpoint waste and boost energy efficiency by up to 20 percent.

Researchers at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST MISIS) have created a digital model designed to reduce hidden energy losses in the mining industry. Early trials show the system can improve efficiency by as much as 20 percent, a breakthrough that could significantly lower costs in one of Russia’s most resource-intensive sectors.

Unlike traditional monitoring methods, the algorithm relies on detailed, real-time data from “smart meters” attached to each piece of equipment. These devices track thousands of parameters across different operating modes, allowing the system to build a consumption baseline—how much energy a machine should ideally use for a given task. By comparing this benchmark with actual usage, the AI identifies both the scale and the root causes of inefficiencies.

Field tests in Siberia, covering more than 5,000 shifts, revealed that hidden energy losses in mining operations can range from 4.5 to 20.7 percent. With the new system, companies can not only detect excessive consumption but also understand the exact reasons behind it.

According to NUST MISIS, the technology offers mining enterprises a practical path toward higher profitability and sustainable development.
