Russian Scientists Develop the Most Accurate Algorithm for Traffic Analysis

A new AI‑driven traffic‑forecasting system developed in Russia reaches an accuracy of up to 94 percent, far surpassing existing international solutions and reshaping how cities can prevent congestion.

A Smarter Way to Predict Traffic

Researchers at Don State Technical University have unveiled an upgraded digital platform for traffic forecasting. The new system achieves a precision level of 94 percent. While comparable models typically predict traffic flow within a range of 70 to 150 vehicles, the Russian algorithm narrows this range to 94–100.

Its key strength lies in its intelligence and flexibility. Instead of relying on preset templates, the model analyzes traffic data dynamically, learning from recurring patterns such as morning and evening rush hours. It also responds to sudden disruptions — snowfall, accidents, or road repairs — automatically determining which factors are critical at any given moment.

Preventing Congestion Before It Forms

“The model is based on universal principles of data analysis. It isn’t tied to traffic rules or the geography of a particular city. To adapt it for Rostov‑on‑Don, Moscow, Beijing, or any other urban area, it is enough to train it on local historical traffic data,” explained Anastasia Feofilova, Associate Professor at the university.

The system represents a major breakthrough in urban traffic management. Its deployment can help cities prevent traffic jams before they arise, optimize traffic‑light operations, and support more informed urban‑planning decisions.
