Russian Scientists Patent a Drone to Combat Ice Accumulation on Power Lines

Researchers at Perm National Research Polytechnic University have patented an autonomous drone capable of applying anti‑icing fluid directly to power lines without shutting off electricity — a breakthrough that increases efficiency and reduces operational costs.

An Intelligent Drone for Extreme Weather

Scientists at the Perm National Research Polytechnic University have developed an aerial device designed to autonomously coat power lines with anti‑icing fluid. The drone resembles a standard multirotor aircraft but features a two‑section body: the upper housing contains the control system, video camera, and pump, while the lower chamber serves as a fluid reservoir. A key innovation is an intelligent positioning system equipped with a one‑meter sensor rod.

This elongated, highly sensitive probe detects the precise location of the wire and functions as a form of ‘artificial vision.’ According to Vladimir Modorsky, Doctor of Engineering and Dean of the Aerospace Faculty, the process begins once a meteorological alert warns of impending icing. After filling the reservoir with hydrophobic liquid, an operator manually guides the drone toward the line using the onboard camera.

The system then automatically activates the pump and travels along the wire, keeping an optimal distance and applying the liquid through a side‑mounted nozzle. Upon reaching the next support tower, the drone stops and switches to manual control so the operator can move it to the next wire.

Efficiency and Cost Savings

Traditional anti‑icing methods for power lines are expensive and often do not resolve the root issue. Mechanical cleaning and electric melting require substantial resources and often necessitate power shutdowns. The drone‑based method is more economical and allows treatment without interrupting electricity. Researchers note that the system has no direct analogues.

This is not the team’s first attempt at solving icing problems. Earlier, they designed an innovative aircraft coating capable of autonomously detecting, removing, and verifying the elimination of ice buildup.

Expertise and Impact

The drone platform contributes significantly to infrastructure resilience, especially in regions with harsh winters. By preventing ice formation proactively, utilities can reduce outages, improve safety, and extend the lifespan of electrical infrastructure. The technology highlights Russia’s growing expertise in aerospace engineering, unmanned aerial systems, and applied sensing technologies.
