Researchers at Novosibirsk State Technical University NETI have upgraded an electronic assistant designed to help blind people navigate urban environments, the university’s press service said. The device, Barrier Trek, can detect obstacles even in difficult weather conditions and can be used by both left- and right-handed users.

Works Even in Bright Sunlight

The device takes the form of a handheld unit equipped with digital sensors that can detect objects at distances of up to eight meters. The upgraded system can now also recognize stairs, natural surface irregularities, and sidewalks. Sensors scan upward, downward, and to the sides. The updated device also features a more powerful battery, allowing it to be recharged only once a week.

The university said the new sensors operate reliably even with reflected light and can accurately identify obstacles. The development also includes an improved model for synthesizing urban environments, repeatedly recreating complex scenarios to improve navigation accuracy and train the algorithms. The digital device is designed to improve the quality of life for people with visual impairments.
