In Russia, an Oil and Gas Company Accelerates Field Development Using AI
Gazprom Neft began building digital geological models for hydrocarbon exploration and production 30 years ago.

Gazprom Neft has significantly shortened the cycle of geological exploration projects by deploying artificial intelligence technologies, the company’s Director for Exploration, Yury Masalkin, said on the sidelines of the ProGRRess industry conference.
He explained that new technologies have sped up the interpretation of seismic survey results by 10% to 30% and moved the start of field development forward by about a year. Notably, Gazprom Neft began creating digital geological models for hydrocarbon exploration and production as far back as 30 years ago.
AI as a Practical Tool
According to the division head, artificial intelligence helps interpret seismic data quickly and accurately.
The company also uses digital tools to consolidate vast volumes of previously collected research data. Neural networks help uncover patterns that traditional detection methods were unable to identify, leading to the discovery of new hydrocarbon deposits that had remained hidden for decades.
