A project to convert the lifting equipment in the pickling department of the steel wire shop No. 1 at the Cherepovets-based Severstal-metiz plant to remote control has been completed. The project became part of the enterprise's broader IT program, called Unmanned Technologies.

Work began back in 2025, when control of two cranes was first routed to a single console. Currently, all five lifting units in the pickling department are operated from a single control room.

"This solution will improve the safety of our employees and reduce production risks. Crane operators can now control the equipment remotely, outside the zone of exposure to aggressive environments and hazardous production factors. In addition, the introduction of this innovative technology will improve the efficiency of the production process and enhance working conditions for personnel," explained Sergey Kovryakov, Director General of Severstal-metiz OJSC.
