In Russia’s Altai Republic, a new digital audio guide now helps travelers explore the region’s dramatic landscapes and ancient heritage in both Russian and English. Built with the help of neural networks, the guide connects visitors to some of Altai’s most iconic natural and archaeological landmarks.
The audio guide Golosa Altaya (Voices of Altai) was launched as part of the national project Turizm i Gostepriimstvo (Tourism and Hospitality), a federal initiative aimed at expanding domestic tourism and improving travel infrastructure across Russia’s regions.
Creator’s Idea Sparks the Project
The project Golosa Altaya began with the idea of musician and producer Andrey Modorov, who proposed creating a modern digital audio guide that would make the tourist routes of the Altai Mountains more accessible to both Russian and international travelers. His concept received grant support from the Ministry of Economic Development of the Altai Republic, allowing the initiative to move from a creative proposal to a full-scale digital tourism project.
The Altai Republic, known for its dramatic mountain landscapes and rich archaeological heritage, became one of the pilot territories for introducing digital tools into the tourism sector.
Neural Networks as the Voice Behind the Guide
During development, the creators relied on AI-based speech synthesis technology. Neural networks generated natural-sounding narration in both Russian and English without the need to hire professional voice actors. This approach made it possible to produce the content quickly and significantly reduce production costs.
Modern speech synthesis technologies provide clear diction and natural intonation, which is particularly important when listeners are moving along a route and absorbing information on the go. Travelers can listen to the narration through headphones without taking their attention away from the surrounding landscapes, a useful feature in mountainous terrain where awareness of the path is essential.
A Route Through Nature and History
The audio guide covers key tourist attractions across the Altai Republic. These include dramatic mountain ranges, alpine lakes, waterfalls and canyons that define the region’s unique landscape. The guide also highlights archaeological complexes located throughout the republic.
