Andrei Neznamov: Russia’s AI Ethics Initiative Brings Together Participants From Around the World

The 2nd Global Digital Forum in Moscow saw the international community supporting the Code of Ethics in Artificial Intelligence grow.

Another 17 companies from 12 countries joined the initiative, endorsing the principles of responsible AI development. Andrei Neznamov, chairman of the Russian Committee on Artificial Intelligence Ethics, spoke about how the code works and what its participants are working to achieve.

– When we began developing Russia’s Code of Ethics in Artificial Intelligence, we didn’t expect so many organizations to join, including from other countries. Initially, the initiative involved around 20 of Russia’s largest companies and universities. Today, the number of signatories has reached 1,400. We’re pleased that an initiative launched in Russia is bringing organizations from different countries together around the idea of responsible AI development.

The code has a mechanism for putting its principles into practice. Signatories form working groups focused on specific areas and develop recommendations for individual sectors, including journalism, the justice system, healthcare and education. An independent expert council has been established for international participants, with its work conducted in English.

One of the council’s current projects examines regional differences in AI ethics across countries. The findings are expected to be published soon.
