Russia Expands Digital Literacy Push With Anti-Deepfake Lessons

A nationwide program is teaching children how to recognize fake videos and audio, aiming to strengthen digital awareness from an early age.

Russia has launched a new season of its educational campaign “Digital Literacy.” The initiative focuses on raising digital awareness among schoolchildren and teenagers across the country.

The program is organized by the nonprofit organization Digital Economy with support from Russia’s Ministry of Digital Development and Ministry of Education. This year’s theme centers on countering deepfakes — AI-generated photos, videos, and audio clips.

The training content is presented as animated shorts. The storyline features cartoon fish from the underwater city of Coralville. The main character, Yan, encounters a fake video showing another fish flying. His attempt to copy the stunt nearly ends in disaster, giving experts a ground to explain how to verify online information.

The material is aimed at audiences as young as six. Schools receive teaching guides and quizzes to reinforce the lessons. The project promotes cybersecurity awareness and helps foster critical thinking in a playful format.
